TONGA – The successful prosecution of the convicted robber and hijacker, Mvelo Mazibuko, was the result of seven years of diligent investigation by Lt Col Nancy Mnisi.
The suspect, who was originally from Phiva, was cornered in an unfinished two-roomed house in Boschfontein and arrested. He was found in possession of an unlicensed firearm.
Mazibuko first broke into a house in Langeloop in August 2011. He shot and almost killed Mkhuleko Khoza (23) and allegedly suffocated Martha Ngomane (48) with a plastic bag.
Later that month, he hijacked a woman who was dropping a friend off at home. He shot her in the hand and stole the vehicle.
After his arrest, Mazibuko was positively linked to the crimes.
Magistrate Edgar Moletsane sentenced Mazibuko to 10 years’ imprisonment for house robbery, five years for attempted murder, 10 years for hijacking and five years for possession of an unlicensed firearm in the Nkomazi Regional Court. He was acquitted of Ngomane’s murder.
Two terms will be served concurrently, thus his total jail sentence amounts to 25 years.
