Police following up all leads to find missing Naas teacher

NAAS – Solomon Mkhabela went missing last Tuesday night and, according to Sgt Gerald Sedibe of Mpumalanga SAPS, his vehicle was found near the Nkomazi River close to the RCL Foods Komati Mill the next morning.

Sedibe said they are still not sure what happened, even after police divers searched the river and the K9 unit was deployed in the nearby bushy area. “We are following all leads at the moment,” he stated.

Solomon’s daughter, Khetsiwe, told Corridor Gazette that the family were woken up by a call from a friend and realised that Solomon was missing.

She said he did not behave strangely when they last saw him. “He said goodnight to my younger brother, then read the Bible with my mom before they went to bed, as usual.”

The family suspects that he left the house in the early hours of the morning, as no one heard him leave. He was spotted by security guards around 02:00 at the Komati toll gate and was reportedly in a hurry.

Khetsiwe says a friend spotted Solomon’s vehicle by the river as he headed to work around 06:45. When he called to check whether Solomon needed any assistance, his wife answered the cellphone.

When he realised that Solomon had left his phone at home, the friend approached the vehicle. The keys were in the ignition and there were no belongings in the vehicle or any other clues on his whereabouts.

“We really have no idea what happened and are all very confused. Whatever we’re thinking, the dots are just not adding up,” Khetsiwe said.

Solomon is a geography teacher at Mehlobomvu Secondary School and his daughter says he was beloved and respected by the pupils and community.
